Former US President Bill Clinton spoke about Nelson Mandela on Friday,
praising the reconciliation efforts promoted by the anti-apartheid leader.
"He brought his jailers to his inauguration, which had huge symbolic impact," Clinton told US broadcaster ABC.
"As a politician and as a president, more important was the fact that he
put the leaders of the parties who had imprisoned him in his cabinet. He
left the structure of the government intact as long as people were willing
to work with him to achieve the objectives of the country," Clinton
said.
Clinton first met former South African President Mandela at the Democratic National Convention in New York in 1992, just before Clinton was to be nominated the Democratic candidate for president.
Clinton and his wife Hillary, the former US Secretary of State, are expected to attend memorial services for Mandela in South Africa next week.
